Surgical Illustration

A medical illustrator is often called upon to provide surgical illustrations. Whenever possible, the medical illustrator will attend the surgery to be documented. Here he/she makes quick sketches of important steps in the surgical procedure. The medical artist's thorough understanding of anatomical relationships and tissue characteristics is crucial to surgical illustration.

By combining this knowledge with information obtained through surgical consultations and pertinent resources, the medical illustrator is able to translate a dynamic process into several illustrations that teach the audience.
